Emmett L. Bennett, Jr.

Emmett Leslie BENNETT, Jr., played a major role in the decipherment of the ancient Minoan language known as Linear B. Born in Minneapolis on 18 July 1918, he received a B.A. from the University of Cincinnati in 1939 and an M.A. in 1940. In 1941 he married Marja Dorothy Adam. Their union produced three sons and two daughters.

Bennet’s mentor, the archaeologist Carl Blegen (1887-1971), also a Minneapolis native, having excavated the mound of Hisarlik, the presumed site of ancient Troy (1932-8), continued his exploration of Mycenaean culture at the excavation at Nestor’s Palace (Ano Englianos) at Pylos (in the western Peloponnese) in 1939 under the auspices of the University of Cincinnati and the Greek Archaeological Service. Blegen retrieved numerous clay tablets that contained mainly municipal records inscribed in a language partly ideograms (a single sign capable of conveying complex notions), which would be useful in accounting, and partly phonetic characters found in regular combinations. The language had first been found on clay tablets discovered in 1900 at the site of the palace of Knossos (The conflagration that destroyed both palaces also fired and thus preserved the otherwise friable clay tablets.) by the archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans (1851-1941). Evans did not believe the language was a form of Greek and posited a pre-Mycenaean civilization which he called Minoan and he named the language of the tablets Linear B, as he had named the earlier language of Cretan tablets Linear A. Linear A is the second known written language in the Aegean and Helladic areas, Linear B the third (the first is unknown) and dates from the second millennium BCE. Blegen’s excavation at Pylos lasted only a year before it was interrupted by the onset of World War II (it was not taken up again until 1952), but he was able to entrust the clay tablets to Bennett, who used them as the basis of his M.A. thesis in 1940 before joining the Army as a cryptanalyst. Cryptology during the war, particularly on coded Japanese transmissions, by Bennett, who worked on Japanese code from 1942 to the war’s end, the Cambridge linguist John Chadwick (1920-98), and Bennett’s associate Alice Kober (1906-50), who had been an assistant to Evans’s associate, the archaeologist Sir John Myres (1869-1954) and a member of the Brooklyn College Classics Department, indirectly led to the decipherment of Linear B because these scholars who taught themselves Japanese while also working on Linear B were training themselves to notice the subtle differences between ideograms. Kober, for instance noticed that there seemed to be variant endings on many words and posited that Linear B was perhaps an inflected language like Latin or Greek. Following the war, Bennett returned to Cincinnati and in 1947 produced a dissertation, “The Minoan Linear Script from Pylos,” a descriptive catalogue of about 80 characters showing the principal variants in the formation of each character but with no attempt at decipherment. Kober’s notions of declension and Bennett’s catalogue of signs greatly served the man who, aided by Chadwick, ultimately deciphered Linear B in 1952, the young English architect and amateur classicist, Michael Ventris (1922-56). Ventris determined, against Evans’s notion, that the language was in fact a pre-Homeric form of Greek.

After completing his dissertation, Bennett was an instructor in classics at Yale (1947-51), and then assistant professor (1951-8). In 1955 he published The Pylos Tablets: Texts of the Inscriptions Found 1939-1954 (Princeton: Princeton University Press) with an introduction by Blegen. After spending 1958-9 at the University of Texas, he was visiting lecturer at the Institute for Research in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1959-60), lecturer (1960-1), and acting director (1968-9). He joined the Wisconsin Classics department in 1960 was promoted to associate professor the next year and professor the year after that. He was a Fulbright resident scholar in Athens (1953-4) and Cambridge (1965), and a Guggenheim fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (1955-6). He began editing Nestor in 1957. He retired in 1988 and died in Madison on 15 December 2011 at the age of 93.

John Douglas MacISAAC conceived a love of the ancient world while a boy. He was born 8 November 1944, the son of an Air Force officer who was stationed in Athens when John was of high-school age. John received his secondary education at the American Academy (ACS) in Athens and he graduated from Fordham with a major in classics. When he graduated, the Vietnam Conflict was growing and John joined the Air Force Reserve, flying over 100 missions as a navigator/bombardier. He retired from the Reserve in 1996 as a lieutenant colonel. After active duty, he married Liane Houghtalin and began graduate study in archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned the MA. He then moved to the Johns Hopkins, where he received a Fulbright Scholarship to work on his dissertation, “The Location of the Republican Mint of Rome and the Topography of the Arx of the Capitoline” (1987). He received the Ph.D. and taught at a number of institutions in Italy and the United States and at the University of Mary Washington from 1993 to 2007. In 2005 he published Excavations at Nemea. 3, The Coins co-edited with Robert C. Knapp (Berkeley: University of California Press). He died 19 November 2011 in Fredericksburg, VA, after a long illness.

Sarah Wraight BLACK was born 15 March 1934, in Mississippi County, AR. She graduated from Monmouth College as a Classics major in 1956 and taught Latin for many years in Tennessee and Alabama. With her husband Duane Arnold Black she raised a family of two children. She was active in Republican Party activities in Tennessee and Alabama. She died on 4 May 2011 in Fayetteville, TN, at the age of 77.

Dorothy Anderson COYNE was a lifelong resident of Pontiac, Illinois, where she taught Latin and English at Green Valley, Fairbury, and her alma mater, Pontiac Township High School for 27 years. Born on 20 September 1915 in Pontiac, she graduated from Pontiac Township High School in 1932 and left her native town to earn a B.A. from Illinois State Normal University in 1936 and an M.A. at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1938. With her husband she raised two sons and a daughter. Mrs. Coyne died in Pontiac on 5 November 2011.

Lillie Belle Drake HAMILTON was born in 1920, and believed that people should explore the world, starting with the world’s languages. Proficient in Spanish, French, Italian, and Latin, “she wanted people,” in the words of her daughter Cynthia, also a Spanish teacher, “to understand there are places in the world where different languages are spoken and things are completely different.” Although she never learned to drive a car, she visited 116 countries and shared inspiring experiences and artifacts with her students. She graduated from Agnes Scott College and earned an M.A. from Middlebury. She was also politically active, having been born within a year of passage of the 19^th Amendment that extended voting rights to women, she attended political conventions and took to heart the report commissioned by the War Department from Professor Edmund Walsh of Georgetown University, which proposed studies for the Students’ Army Training Corps (the predecessor of ROTC). For two years she taught at the Woman’s Teacher Training College in Tripoli, Libya, then returned to Atlanta and taught school at every level: elementary, junior, and senior high school in Fulton County, Georgia. She was a founder of the Foreign Language Association of Georgia (FLAG), which in 1968 named her Latin teacher of the year and Spanish teacher of the year in 1973. She was president of the National Spanish Honor Society, Co-Chair of the Georgia Junior Classical League, and Contest Chair for the National Junior Classical League, where she participated in 32 NJCL conventions. She retired in 1981 from the former College Park High School and was inducted into the Georgia Teacher Hall of Fame. In 1962, she solicited a letter on the value of foreign Language study from the USA Ambassador to the United Nations, Adlai Stevenson. The Ambassador replied with a letter written partly in Latin. In 1952 she married Victor Hamilton, also proficient in several languages, and over the years they became legendary travelers, accompanying their two daughters all over the world. She died 2 October 2011 at the age of 92 in Union City, Georgia.

Robert E. Neslund

Robert Eugene NESLUND was an historian, a community activist, but chiefly a devoted teacher of Latin . Born in Mt. Vernon, Washington, on 2 November 1940, he was educated in Stanwood, Washington and received his B.A. from Wheaton (Ill.) College in 1963. He did graduate work for a year at the University of Chicago, but took a teaching position in English at Shattuck-St. Mary’s, an Episcopal private school in Faribault, Minnesota, but soon took over the Latin classes. Though he was able to cobble together enough spare time to earn an M.A. at St. John’s College in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and occasionally to take summer courses at the University of Washington, he maintained his service and loyalty to Shattuck for 43 years, serving as chapel organist and master of a residence hall. He was known as a rigorous, fair teacher who led students on tours of Italy in the 1990s, advised the students art magazine and curated the sesquicentennial collection in the school museum. He wrote columns on local history for the Faribault newspaper and combined his love of history and his school in his deeply researched account of his school’s first century and a half: For a Life of Learning and Service: How Shattuck-St. Mary’s Came To Be. He was also active in his church, the Cathedral of Our Merciful Saviour and wrote it history, The First Cathedral. Bob was also instrumental in establishing a community service component for graduation from the school and embodied its ideal as he worked for Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, and the Cannon Valley Elder Collegium. He was unmarred. Bob Neslund died at home in Faribault, 9 October 2011.

Andrew J. ADAMS was born, with his twin brother Arthur, on 8 May 1944 in Aurora, Illinois, and he lived his entire life in his native state, but for his graduate years at Indiana University, where he received an M.A. and in 1975 a Ph.D. with a dissertation, “The Nature of Martial’s Epigrams.” He grew up in Mooseheart, where his father was a high-school principal, and then moved to Batavia. He graduated from Monmouth College where he was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow with a double major in Latin and Russian. In 1970 he was appointed to the faculty at North Central College in Naperville where he taught courses in introductory Latin, ancient history, and classical mythology, chaired the foreign language department, created an advisement center, and for 16 years was a residence hall director. He was devoted to Latin students, some of whom he guided (with his colleagues Bill and Herbie Naumann) around ancient sites in Italy in 1975, his editing of an elementary Latin textbook, and his yearly contribution of two examinations to the Illinois Classical Conference for the Illinois State High school Latin Tournament. His board game Classical Trivia sold more than 1200 copies. In 1991 he was promoted to full professor and he retired after 34 years of service in 2004, when he was honored with the college’s Sesquicentennial medal. His passionate interest in the life of Illinois’ favorite son, Abraham Lincoln, led to his discovery in 2003 of a previously unknown census document regarding the residence of Lincoln’s stepmother, Sarah Bush Johnston. Adams died after stepping in front of a train blocks from his home in Naperville on 30 September 2011.

Norma Goldman

Norma Wynick GOLDMAN was born 30 March 1922 in Pittsburgh, PA, but her family moved to Detroit when Norma was in her teens. The first stage of her lifelong association with Wayne State University (then Wayne University) was completed with her bachelor’s degree (Phi Beta Kappa) in 1944, the same year that she began another lifelong association: a 61-year marriage to Bernard M. Goldman, an art historian. Her 48-year career at Wayne State University was chiefly distinguished by her indefatigable devotion to making Latin as pleasant and culturally enriching a process as possible teaching Introductory Latin, Life in Ancient Rome, and Etymology. In the summers she was a regular fixture at the American Academy in Rome and regularly guided students energetically around the great sites, linking the Latin language, literature and monuments into a seamless story as late as the last summer of her life. Her classroom approach is embodied in her widely used textbook, Latin via Ovid (with Jacob Nyenhius; 1977; 2^nd ed., 1982) and its workbook, Practice Practice (with Michael Rossi; rev. ed., 1993) but also in English Grammar for Students of Latin: The Study Guide for Those Learning Latin (2^nd ed., 1993). With her colleague Edith M.A. Kovach (1921-2009) she founded the Detroit Classical Association.

She also made a considerable contribution to Roman archaeology. Her friend Cleo Rickman Fitch (1910-95) had joined the archaeological investigations at Cosa, north of Rome in 1962. She had been assigned to catalogue the nearly 1200 terracotta lamps (largely in fragments) existing at the site. Though almost all had been crushed in the various rebuildings of the forum and other parts of the city, Fitch set about carefully cataloguing and expertly drawing the pieces. In 1979 she invited Norma to join her. In the course of her work, Norma even learned the potter’s skills to have a clearer understanding of the craftsmanship that went into the lamps. This indirectly led to her efforts to determine the formula for making Roman concrete, which won her a feature appearance on the BBC’s Nova program about the Colosseum. A quarter century after they began their collaboration, Norma and Cleo published the results of their protracted and exacting labor as volume 39 of the Memoirs of the American Academy in Rome, entitled Cosa: The Lamps (1994). Following Fitch’s death in January 1995, Norma organized a symposium for veterans of the Cosa project, “Lux ex Cosa,” held on 20 May 1995 at the New York offices of the Academy and subsequently published the papers as New Light from Ancient Cosa: Classical Mediterranean Studies in Honor of Cleo Rickman Fitch (Peter Lang, 2001), collecting 11 articles on the topography, history, and archaeology of Cosa and 5 articles on mythology (Helen North), painted plaster (Anne Laidlaw), relief sculpture (Larissa Bonfante), ancient travel (Lionel Casson), and the layout of Alexandria (Blanche Brown). Norma was also noted for developing an interest in the architecture of the places she loved. Her tours of Rome and the Bay of Naples (often for the Detroit Institute of the Arts) were legendary as was her devotion to the Classical Sciety of the American Academy in Rome, which she visited for 31 summers in succession. Her interest in the architectural history of the Academy itself led her to edit (with Katherine A. Geffcken) The Janus View: Essays on the Janiculum (American Academy in Rome: 2007). She also took a special interest in the architect Albert Kahn (1869-1942) and gave tours of his buildings in Detroit.

Norma was also quite skilled with a needle and thread, which she used to her advantage in her study and reproduction of Roman costume. She gave nearly 30 shows of Roman costume at home and abroad, and a video entitled “Let’s Wrap: 1000 Years of Roman Costume” was of enormous value to students preparing for classical plays or pageants or JCL Forums. She published two articles in the definitive work on Roman dress, The World of Roman Costume (U of Wisconsin Press, 1993) and combining her knowledge of archaeology and needle arts, she wrote an article “Reconstructing the Roman Colosseum Awning” Archaeology 35.2 (1982) 57-65, the velarium mentioned by Lucretius, Pliny the Elder, and Vitruvius to shade spectators from the afternoon sun. She looked at the theories of Carlo Fontana (1725) and Luigi Canina (1848), but concluded, as she testified on the Nova program “Secrets of Lost Empires: Colosseum” which appeared on PBS 12 February 1997, that the word velarium comes from the Latin word for sail and sailors from Misenum were stationed near the Colosseum because they “were needed to handle the rope and cloth.” In the same program she explained how Romans used the volcanic sands around the Bay of Naples to make waterproof concrete. She also participated in archaeological digs at Caesarea in Israel and Persepolis in Iran and in her 70s began to practice underwater archaeology.

Back in America, she was President of the Detroit Classical Association, Secretary of the Antiquities at the Detroit Institute of the Arts, and Regional Representative for the Classical Association of the Middle West and South, from which she received an ovatio in 1988. In 2006 she received a Merita Award from the American Classical League. At Wayne State she was given a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1985 and in 1993 she moved to the Department of Interdependency. In 2003 she founded the Society of Active Retirees (SOAR) to help retirees take classes at the university.

Her husband Bernard, who taught art history at Wayne State for 40 years, shared her interest in ancient archaeology and at the time of his death in 2006 he had gathered and annotated the letters of Susan M. Hopkins who, with her husband Clark, comprised half of the original team of archaeologists excavating the site of this Roman outpost in western Asia founded by Greeks in 300 BCE. The site had lain buried until just after World War I and was first excavated between 1928 and 1935. After Bernard’s death Norma completed the manuscript and added 200 illustrations of the site and the archaeologists. My Dura-Europos: The Letters of Susan M. Hopkins 1927-1935, was published in September 2011. Norma Goldman died at the age of 89 on 1 October 2011 in Fountain Hills, Arizona after a yearlong battle with cancer. T. Corey Brennan, Mellon Professor at the Academy said of her passing, “This insistence for seeing antiquity and the modern age as a continuum, and the gift for bringing out the similarities as well as the differences between the Classical and the modern, is just one of the many things for which we all always miss Norma."

Archibald Joseph CHRISTOPHERSON was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota, 17 September 1931. He received his A.B. in philosophy from St. Paul Seminary in 1952. His graduate study at the University of Minnesota was interrupted by military service, after which, he married in 1956, and from 1957 to 1962 taught at De Matha High School in Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C. Following his M.A. in history from the University of Maryland in 1961, he taught for a year at the Catholic University of America (1961-2). He taught ancient history at Northwestern University (1962-3) and Classics and ancient history at the University of Missouri (1963-5). Upon completing his Ph.D. at Maryland under Wilhelmina Jashemski in 1965 with a dissertation entitled “The Establishment of Roman Government in the Three Gauls,” he was named assistant professor of classics and history at the University of Cincinnati (1965-8). He excerpted his dissertation as “The Provincial Assembly of the Three Gauls in the Julio-Claudian Period,” in Historia 17(1968) 351-66 and was promoted to associate professor in 1968. He chaired the department in 1973-4, and directed numerous theses and dissertations. In 1993 he published “A Prolegomena to the Study of Property and Society in Early Rome” in Alpha to Omega : Studies in Honor of George John Szemler on his Sixty-Fifth Birthday, ed. William J. Cherf (Chicago: Ares). He died on 20 September 2011, three days after his 80^th birthday.

DOUGLASS STOTT PARKER was among the most creative and beloved members of our profession. He was born on May 27, 1927 and received his Ph.D. from Princeton in 1952 with a dissertation on Epicurean imagery in Lucretius. In his 40 years of teaching at the University of Texas, he taught courses in the theory of translation, classical civilization, and a specialty of his own devising, parageography, the geography of fantastical realms. There can hardly be a reader interested at any level in Greek comedy who has not used his translations of Aristophanes, which he began in the late 1960s about the time of the ascent of Arion magazine, begun by him and William Arrowsmith and others in the Texas Classics Department. He had recently translated some Roman comedies as well and translated many Greek and Roman from the familiar (Ovid, Metamorphoses 1) to the rarefied (Nonnos). He had the gifts of wide reading, deep knowledge of the languages, a ready wit and a sense of theatre that made his translations come almost as alive on the page as they were on the stage. He was a fatherly mentor to professional classicists interested in ancient theatre and modern presentation and was himself last seen on stage as the elder Housman in the reading of Tom Stoppard’s The Invention of Love at the 2002 APA meeting. He was a Fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies in its inaugural year 1961-2 and he received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1984. He greatly loved jazz and played the trombone in jazz groups all of his life, specializing in improvisation. He died in Austin on February 8, 2011 at the age of 83. He requested that his epitaph read, "but I digress…"

SHARON R. GIBSON of Brownsburg, Indiana, was a graduate of Wheaton College and received an M.A. from Ball State University. She taught Latin in the high schools of Pascagoula, Mississippi, for eight years and Brownsburg, Indiana, for 27 years. Her proficiency as a teacher was recognized in 1982 when she was named Indiana Classical Conference Creative Latin Teacher of the Year in 1982, in 1999 when she was named Brownsburg Schools Teacher of the Year, and in 2004 when she was Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year. She died at the age of 70 on 31 January, 2011.

WALTER E. SPENCER was a real estate man from 1982 to 1986 who decided to return to complete his studies at Tulane, where he developed a commitment to Latin teaching before graduating in 1985. He received his teacher certification from the University of North Carolina at Ashville in 1989. He received his A.M. (1992) and Ph.D. (2001) in Classics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was a visiting assistant professor at both Illinois (2001-3) and Case Western Reserve (2003-6) before joining the staff at J.H. Rose High School in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he was a successful and popular teacher from 2006 until his death. He was a devoted member of CAMWS (he presented a paper in 1999), the ACL and the APA. He died at the age of 54 in Lakewood, Ohio, on September 30, 2010.

RICHARD EDMON PRIOR was born in Syracuse, New York, to Edmon and Stella Beaulieu Prior in 1962. At Baldwinsville High School in 1980, he accomplished the rare feat of receiving a New York State Regents diploma in four languages. His amazing Sprachgefühl ultimately gave him fluency in French, Spanish, German, and Italian and a working knowledge of Japanese, Sanskrit, Finnish, Portuguese, Russian, and Chinese. He graduated as a Latin major with a certification in teaching from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (1985) and taught in junior and senior high schools in North Carolina and Virginia, initiating the study of Greek at the high-school level in the Southeast in 1986. He received an M.A. from the University of Maryland (1991), and a Ph.D. from SUNY-Buffalo (1994), after which he taught at Furman University until his death, chairing the Department of Classics in 2009-10. He was a Life Member of CAMWS and Vice-President for South Carolina from 2001-2010. His summer expeditions with devoted students traversed Italy and offered the same wealth or knowledge and good humor that he displayed as a commentator for programs on the National Geographic and History channels. His research specialty was Latin pedagogy, beginning with 501 Latin Verbs (1995) through Latin Demystified: A Self Teacher (2008). He was a Buddhist who played the French horn and ice hockey. He adored Virgil, all dogs, winemaking, Buddhism, and his painting of Elvis on black velvet. He and his partner, Scott Henderson, were together for 24 years. He died at 47 from pneumonia on 24 August 2010.

GEORGE HARRIS’s education formed a remarkable trajectory. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1932, his early schooling took place in a one-room schoolhouse. From that humble beginning, Harris enrolled at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and received his B.A. He moved on to Ann Arbor, where he received an M.A. in Classics from the University of Michigan (1959) and then to Evanston, where he received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University (1971). After those years of regular changes of scene and increasing academic accomplishment, his life was marked by loyalty and stability. His hometown sweetheart, Ina, was his wife for 57 years; his career at Calvin lasted 35. He was a longtime member of CAMWS, a devoted teacher of the classics, a generous volunteer in his community, an enthusiastic traveller and a perpetually optimistic fan of the Chicago Cubs. He died in Grand Rapids on July 3, 2010, following a brave and protracted battle with leukemia.

LOUISE PRICE HOY was born in Mullins, West Virginia on November 11, 1920 to Cyrus Christopher, a manager of coal company stores, and Eva Louise Price. She received a B.A. in Latin from Duke in 1939, then earned the M.A. ((1945) and Ph.D. (1952) from Bryn Mawr, where she was the last student to write a dissertation under Lily Ross Taylor. She taught at Swarthmore College and Case Western Reserve University before returning to her native West Virginia and Marshall University in 1963, where she chaired the classics department for 24 years. Her sophisticated education did nothing to dispel the memories of the disadvantaged rural populations she met in her youth as her father’s job required her family to move back and forth across the state. She knew the value of Latin and she knew how to bring Latin to the students and to inspire her students to do the same. Her research specialty was Latin pedagogy. She taught overloads, trained her students both to be teachers and researchers, and generously supported both financially and personally the teachers and students who received insufficient support from their schools. It was estimated that by the middle of her career at Marshall, she had trained virtually every high-school Latin teacher in West Virginia. She was a longtime CAMWS vice-president for West Virginia. She died at the age of 89 on July 4, 2010.

LLOYD LAVERNE GUNDERSON was born on August 24, 1931 in Pleasantville, Wisconsin, the son of a car dealer. He majored in history at St. Olaf College, gradating in 1953. He went on to receive a Bachelors of Theology from Luther Seminary in Minneapolis in 1957, an A.M. (1959) and Ph.D. (1966) in Classics from the University of Wisconsin. He had two periods of religious service with congregations in Ballard, Washington and Brooklyn, New York in 1957-8, and following his Master’s degree in Black Earth and Cambridge, Wisconsin. In 1962 he and his wife Connie, whom he had met and married in Brooklyn, New York, in 1958, settles in Moorhead, Minnesota where he assumed teching duties at Concordia College as Assistant Professor of Classics (1962-7). In 1967 he moved his family to St. Olaf, where he taught until his retirement in 1994, chairing the department from 1967 to 1982, in which position he hired both Jim May and Anne Groton. He was a visiting scholar at the Institute for Research in Humanities in Madison (1973-4) and Wolfson College, Cambridge (1981). His research specialty was Alexander the Great on which he published a number of articles. He regularly attended CAMWS meetings and gave papers in 1986 and 1987. He taught at St. Olaf for 27 years and was married for 51 years. He died at his home outside Northfield on July 4, 2010 after battling cancer of the esophagus.

HERBERT M. HOWE filled his 98 years with scholarship and physical activity. He was born in Bristol, Rhode Island, March 21, 1912 to Wallis and Mary Locke Howe. He received his A.B. from Harvard in 1934, after which he taught at the Brooks School in North Andover, Mass., (1934-40). In 1941 he went to the University of Madison where, at the Episcopalian St. Francis House on University Avenue he met and married a Londoner, Evelyn Grace Mitchell, and acquired an M.A. in Classics. After teaching at the Pomfret School in Pomfret, Connecticut (1942-48), he received his Ph.D. (1948) from the University of Wisconsin, after which he was hired by the University as assistant professor of Classics. Howe made a specialty of the classics-in-translation courses that were becoming rapidly popular after World War II. He taught Greek and Latin Medical Terminology, Ancient Religion and the Early Church, and the hugely popular Classical Mythology. To support his teaching, he developed textbooks, notably Classics in Translation (1952) with his colleague Paul MacKendrick. This two-volume work, still in print in paperback, is the all-time best selling book from the University of Wisconsin Press. With Walter Agard he wrote Medical Greek and Latin, Ancient Religion and the Early Church and provided translations for Barry Powell’s Classical Mythology. With his wife Eve, who earned a Ph.D. at Wisconsin in 1946, he was a leader of the Integrated Liberal Studies Program at Wisconsin and in the 1950s served in loco parentis to the promising 15-16-year-old students who came to campus under a grant from the Ford Foundation. Graduates of this program later endowed the Herbert and Evelyn Howe Bascom Professorship for ILS professors. Herb once estimated that in his 34-year career in Madison that he had taught over 26,000 students, more than any other faculty member in the institution’s history.

To improve his teaching of medical terms he studied anatomy, which reinforced his ability to maintain his physical exercise regime, for physical as well as intellectual vigor characterized Herb. He and Eve never owned a car, but walked or bicycled everywhere. Herb held international records for his age group as a competitive Masters swimmer and at 88 was named Badger State Athlete of the Year in 2000. He once estimated that he had swum over 25,000 miles, the circumference of the earth at the equator. He and Eve were an inseparable couple throughout their nearly 70-year marriage, teaching, mentoring, hosting, walking, and biking all over Madison, when they were not working (Herb continued to contribute translations into his 90s and at 94 published an article on the anatomist Johannes Wepfer) in their great Gothic house. He died on June 29, 2010 in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, at the age of 98. Eve Howe, aged 94, followed him two days later.

Colin M. Wells was born on November 15, 1933, in Nottingham, England. He graduated from Nottingham High School and went up to Oriel College, Oxford. He then passed his military service in Egypt. He returned to Oxford to finish a degree with an interest in philosophy. While still an undergraduate he converted to Catholicism at 21 and began his teaching career at Beaumont College, a Jesuit public school in Old Windsor. He taught at the University of Ottawa, in the northeast corner of CAMWS territory, for two years, but after marriage to Kate Hughes in 1960 and the birth of a son, he returned to Oxford, where in 1966 he completed a D.Phil. with a dissertation on the frontiers of the Roman empire under Augustus. Back at Ottawa, he chaired the Classics department, established a new classical civilization course, edited Classical News & Views / Echos du monde classique, and served as Vice Dean. All this while, he maintained an active scholarly record, producing The German Policy of Augustus in 1972. Beginning in 1976 he and Edith Wightman led the dig at Carthage. His book on the Roman Empire appeared in 1984 and has remained a popular basic account. In 1987 he moved from Ottawa to San Antonio, on the southern edge of CAMWS territory, where he had been appointed Distinguished Professor of Classics at Trinity University. He retired in 2003 and returned first to Oxford, then to a comfortable house in Normandy. He died surrounded by his family in Bangor, North Wales, on March 11, 2010.

Kathryn A. Thomas (2010)

Kathryn Anne Thomas had the unique distinction of being the longest serving president of CAMWS, taking up her position four months early due to the resignation of the sitting president, serving from January 1, 1994 through 1995. She also had the pleasure of hosting the annual meeting in her native city, where she also spent her career in the Classics department of Creighton University. She graduated from Creighton and received her Ph.D. from Loyola University of Chicago. Her abilities were recognized by her holding the Jacobson Chair in Communication at Creighton 1980-2. She contributed to the Standards for Classical Language Learning project of the APA and ACL. Her varied interests included the classical tradition in her native state, especially the sculptures and mosaics in and on the state capitol building in Lincoln that depict the history of law; libraries in the ancient world; ancient Olympic Games and their re-creations in modern times; ships and trade in the ancient world; Mediterranean diet and cuisine and diet in the ancient Greco-Roman world; development of the Greek language from antiquity to modern times; icon writing and Byzantine icons. At the time of her death she was associate professor of classics in the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies. She died in Omaha on March 10, 2010.

Jean M. D'Amato-Thomas (2010)

Jean M. D'Amato-Thomas was born on July 20, 1945, in Boston. She received a B.A. form Tufts in 1967, and M.A. from Middlebury in 1969, and a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins in 1978. Earlyin her career she taught at Williams, Tufts, Brandeis, and the University of Pittsburgh. From 1988 to her death she was professor of Classics at the Louisiana Scholars' College at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. She received a Mildred Hart Bailey Award for research at Northwestern and recently an American Philosophical Association grant to study ancient works in southwest Italy. She had long experience as with the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies at Stanford and as a Program Officer at the NEH. Jean was noted primarily as a tireless teacher who won an award for teaching at the University of Southern California and who cheerfully led packs of enthusiastic students across the historic sites of Italy, but not to the exclusion of post-classical Italian culture. She had a keen interest in operas drawn from ancient history or mythology, and an evening at the opera was the highlight of every trip. Her husband, Fleming Thomas, predeceased her. Jean died following a brief illness on March 9, 2010, in Natchitoches.

Oliver C. Phillips, Jr. was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on October 23, 1929. He received a B.S. in Education from the University of Kansas, an M.A. from the University of Missouri, and a Ph.D. in Classics from the University of Chicago in 1962, with a dissertation on the influence of Ovid on Lucan. He maintained his ties with the University of Chicago by contributing reviews to Classical Philology through the late 1960s and early 1970s. He began his career as a teacher in the public schools of Kansas and Missouri, then joined the faculty of William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, in 1963. In 1964 he was appointed to the faculty at the University of Kansas where he remained until his retirement in 1994. He received a Mortar Board Award for teaching in 1978, was a Visiting Professor at Cologne in 1983, and was given a CAMWS ovatio in 1993. He continued teaching after his retirement and was a contributor to the online Suda project. He married Shirley Lease on June 6, 1954, with whom he had two sons and five grandchildren. He died at the age of 80 on February 20, 2010, in Lawrence, Kansas.

Arthur F. Stocker (2010)

Arthur Frederick Stocker was born in Bethlehem, PA, on January 24, 1914. His family moved to New York City when Arthur was five and he retained the elegance, charm, and cheerful cosmopolitan Republicanism that bespeak the silk-stocking Manhattan of his youth. He attended the public schools there, graduating from George Washington High School in 1930. He graduated from Williams College summa cum laude then was on to Harvard where he received an M.A. in 1935 and a Ph.D. in 1939. At Harvard, one of his teachers, Edward Kennard Rand was at work on the manuscripts of Servius and he directed dissertations on Servius for a number of students, including John J.H. Savage, Frederic Wheelock, and Arthur, among others. These dissertations earned their authors co-editing credit on the first volume of the "Harvard Servius" in 1946. Arthur wrote a vivid and sympathetic account of Rand for The American Scholar in 1982. With his Sheldon Travelling Fellowship for 1939-40 was canceled with the outbreak of war, Arthur took a position at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, but was eventually called up for service in 1942. He spent most of the war in the headquarters of the Second Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colorado, as an Historical Officer. In 1946 he began his career at the University of Virginia, serving until 1984, with stints as chair of the Classics Department (1955-63; 1968-78), Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (1962-6), secretary of the academic faculty and secretary of the general faculty. He was President of the Classical Association of Virginia (1949-52), the Southern Section of CAMWS (1961-3), and CAMWS (1970-71). Past the age of 50, Arthur married Marian West, a Latin teacher at St. Catherine's School in Richmond upon her retirement in 1968. She died on July 3, 1997. Arthur was a devoted member of many cultural and historic preservation societies in Charlottesville and could give unforgettable tours of the campus and the University cemetery. At the time of his death he was the senior ex-president of CAMWS and the last of the "Harvard Servius" group. He died peacefully at the great age of 95 at the Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge on January 13, 2010.

Roger Allen Hornsby was born in Nye, Wisconsin, on August 8, 1926. After receiving his B.A. from Adelbert College of Western Reserve University in 1949, he received the A.M. (1951) and Ph.D. (1952) from Princeton. After service in the Army, he began his teaching career at the University of Iowa in 1954, where he remained until his retirement in 1991. In 1960 he married a colleague in French, Jessie Lynn Gillespie. He chaired the Classics Department from 1966 to 1981. Remembered by his students as a learned and generous but strict and exacting teacher who made Latin poetry accessible and rewarding, he put much of his classroom technique into Reading Latin Poetry (1967), which is still the best book for teaching students to appreciate the varieties and nuances of Latin verse free from any critical ideology. His second book, Patterns of Action in the Aeneid: An Interpretation of Vergil’s Epic Similes (1970), is a sensitive study of uses to which Virgil puts his epic comparisons. The book is only marred by the absence of any mention of Homer. After retiring he served a term as Whichard Distinguished Professor of Classics at East Carolina University 1997-8. He was President of CAMWS in 1968-69 and a director of the APA 1974-7. He was a trustee of the American Academy in Rome, a fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies, and a trustee of the Virgilian Society. He died in Iowa City on October 19, 2009.

Edith M. A. Kovach (2009)

Edith M.A. Kovach was born on March 29, 1921, in New York City. As a child she moved to Detroit with her family and called it her home for the rest of her life. She graduated from Central High School, then Wayne State, from which she received a B.A. and an M.A. in Classics. She earned her doctorate at the University of Michigan. She returned home to a career that neatly divided itself into two halves: she taught for over 20 years in Detroit high schools, chiefly Mumford High School, before moving to the University of Detroit, where she also taught for just over 20 years beginning in 1965. She chaired the Department of Classical Studies and developed her signature course, "Word Power," a vocabulary builder based on ancient cognates. Her success at maintaining and vitalizing Classics on the campus earned her the University's Presidential Medal for teaching. She periodically left home to share her skills with others, giving countless workshops and teaching seminars across the country. Her voice reached many students via her audio tapes for the Ullman-Henry Latin for Americans series. She helped write the National Latin Exam, served on the NEH's National Humanities Faculty and the Campus Advisory Board of the APA, and was a founder of the Detroit Classical Association and the Michigan Classical Conference. With the support of the University of Michigan she was able to spend a summer of research at the American Academy in Rome. As her friend Alice McIntyre said, "She had a marvelous ability for bringing all classic arts and languages together so that people developed a depth of understanding and genuine appreciation." She died 1 July 2009, in Bloomfield Hills, MI.

Richard T. Scanlan (2009)

Richard Thomas Scanlan was nothing less than an institution on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. So popular was his course on classical mythology that most Illini felt they had been shortchanged on their tuition if they did not take it. The class regularly closed at 1200, though it might easily have had twice that number eager to register for it. In lieu of a standard lecture, Dick would often dress up as a mythological figure, Hercules, Vulcan, or Venus and be interviewed onstage by a graduate assistant. He was one of the early consultants on the PLATO system, the first successful program for teaching via computers. His Latin Skills course was later adapted for Apple and PC computers and for all the common textbooks, especially Wheelock's. As with Mr. Chips, Scanlan taught generations of the same Illini families, often first encountering them in high schools when he delivered the latest adventures of his own hand-drawn cartoon character "Superlegatus." His courses were so profitable that his department had the luxury of offering rarefied courses like Old Nubian to only a handful of students. Like many a charismatic figure of antiquity, Scanlon was imbued by the students (and particularly the football team) with prophetic powers. So notable were his public reading of the omens at football games and pep rallies (even though his regular predictions of an Illinois victory did not always come true) that he, in mantic robes and carried aloft on a litter by students, was featured in PEOPLE magazine. A permanent deacon of his Catholic church, for which he received the Pere Marquette Award for service to the church in 2005, he was a noted preacher and advocate for the disadvantaged. He died on June 21, 2009 in Urbana.

Joyce Temple Ward (2008)

Joyce Temple Ward lived her entire life in Nashville, where she was born in 1943. She graduated with high honors from George Peabody College in 1965 and three years later began a teaching career that would last forty-one years, first at Franklin High School, then for the next thirty-seven years at Harpeth Hall School. For fifteen of those years she was the chair of the Foreign Languages Department. Her love of antique lands was shared with her students during fifteen trips of study abroad from 1983 to 2006. Not only did her students receive expert guidance around Italy, Greece, and Egypt, but they were also admitted through the iron gates of Chicago House, the home of the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute's Epigraphic Survey at Luxor. Honors fell upon Mrs. Ward throughout her career: she was named Outstanding Teacher of the Year at her school in 1984, the same year that she was named Tennessee Latin Teacher of the Year by the Tennessee Foreign Language Teachers Association. She was the first holder of the Owen Chair for Excellence in Teaching in 1994 and three years later was given the Golden Apple Award for Teaching Excellence by Peabody College. A devoted member of CAMWS, she retained in her library nearly thirty-five years' worth of Classical Journal. She died on August 18, 2008, after a valiant battle with a rare form of t-cell lymphoma.

John T. Quinn (2008)

It seems that for each octo- or nonagenarian we memorialize each year, we must remember one called away from us at an age which even the ancients would consider unripened. John T. Quinn received a B.A. from Notre Dame in 1984, an M.A. in 1986 and a Ph.D. in 1994 from the University of Texas at Austin, with a dissertation on Florus. He began his teaching career at Hope College in 1995, where he published on his academic specialty, translation, but where his true devotion was to the students in his Latin or Greek or Coptic classes. He is remembered for the extraordinary passion he brought to his teaching (and even to the papers he read at CAMWS meetings), which was rewarded with grants from the NEH, the U.S. Department of Education and the Fulbright-Hayes Group for Study Abroad. The students he led during summer tours of Greece and the alumni he guided through the monuments of ancient Rome declared that cold marble seemed almost to breathe with life when John's eyes lit up at a site that a figure of antiquity, sometimes his beloved Horace, might himself have witnessed. John died while running at the lunch hour on June 19, 2008.

William Thomas "Tom" Jolly (2007)

William Thomas "Tom" Jolly was a native of Helena, Arkansas, where he was born in 1929. He devoted his career to the students of his alma mater, Rhodes College. Following his graduation in 1952, he received a master’s from the University of Mississippi and a Ph.D. from Tulane. He returned to Rhodes in 1965 and for twenty years (1973-1993) he held the fort alone, teaching all the Greek and Latin at the college, before a rescue party in the form of Kenneth Morrell was called in. Morrell said that Jolly was "a professor among professors," who manifestly earned the Clarence Day Award for Outstanding Teaching in 1991. Like many great teachers, his devotion to his students often extended beyond the classroom. Said one of his students, now a commander in the Navy, "A number of his students when in graduate school had some tuition paid or cars repaired by Tom." He died at the age of 78 on November 4, 2007, of complications that followed a stroke ten years earlier.

Hazel Estella Barnes (2008)

Hazel Estella Barnes was trained in classics at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (B.A. 1937), close to her home in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, where she was born on 16 December 1915. She went on to Yale where she received a Ph.D. in 1941 in a class that included Henry Immerwahr, Henry Hoenigswald, and Christopher Dawson. Her passion was for Greek philosophy and after stints at Ohio State University, the University of Toledo, and Pierce College in Athens, Greece, she arrived at the University of Colorado in Boulder in 1953. It was well before this, however, in 1949, at the age of 34, that she first read the French Existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre and her life was changed. "How was it that from my first introduction I felt such empathic affiliation with Parisian intellectuals whose lives . . . were so unlike my own, both in external events and in intimate lifestyle?" she asked in her 1998 autobiography, The Story I Tell Myself: A Venture in Existentialist Autobiography. She set about translating Sartre's magisterial work, Being and Nothingness (1956) and later Search for a Method (1963). Though many assumed a gulf between the Greeks and the Existentialists, Barnes clearly did not. In fact she felt her classical training predisposed her to Sartre, Beauvoir, and Camus because they so frequently explained their philosophy in terms of classical figures like Sisyphus, Prometheus, and Medusa. In fact, Barnes and Camus had both written dissertations on Plotinus. Like the Greeks the Existentialists denied any fixed barriers between literature, philosophy and psychology. Finally, Greek philosophy was consumed by describing the authentic life and "the high value the Greek philosophers placed on reason unites more than it separates them from the French Existentialists." Though Barnes maintained her classics credentials with books like Hippolytus in Drama and Myth (1960) and The Meddling Gods: Four Essays on Classical Themes (1974), her great achievement was the popularization of her beloved Existentialists, not only through her translations, but also through her important studies, An Existential Ethic (1967), Sartre (1973), and Sartre and Flaubert (1981).

At Colorado, Barnes moved from the Classics Department to humanities and ultimately to philosophy. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1977 and two years later became the first woman to be named a Distinguished Professor at CU. She received the university’s highest award, the University of Colorado Medal and in 1991, CU established the Hazel E. Barnes Prize, worth $20,000 to the recipient whose activity shows "the enriching relationship between teaching and research." Following her retirement in 1986, she traveled and lectured widely. For her 90th birthday she corrected what she considered a blemish on Athenian tragedy by re-writing the end of Euripides' Alcestis, which was subsequently published in Amphora. She died on March 18, 2008, at her home in Boulder.

Frank H. Longstreth (2008)

Frank H. Longstreth was a pillar of the Western Reserve Academy in Shaker Heights. Born to an old Main Line Philadelphia family, he did graduate work at Penn after service during Word War II in the Marine Corps, whose lapel pin he proudly wore on his crisply tailored blazers and suit jackets. He came to Western Reserve in 1948 and stayed as a teacher and campus fixture for 44 years. Known across campus as "Stretch," he was as handsome and well-dressed as a Gentleman’s Quarterly model, even when his white hair gave him the aquiline appearance of our national symbol. He was devoted to Broadway show tunes and college fight songs, along with a quiver full of barbed lines from old movies, all of which he employed to encourage and amuse his students both in the classroom and the athletic fields. He was honored by CAMWS as a Teacher of the Year. He died at the age of 86 on March 19, 2008.

Allen Ross Scaife (2008)

It is especially sad when those who devote themselves to leading their fields into the future are denied a fair portion of that future for themselves. Allen Ross Scaife was a native of Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he was born in 1960. He majored in Classics and philosophy at William and Mary and received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas in 1990. A Fulbright year in 1985 allowed him unfettered time at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, where he developed research and materials for the many and diverse courses he taught at the University of Kentucky from 1991 until his death. He will be remembered by the world at large for his work as editor of the Stoa Consortium for Electronic Publication in the Humanities. His website set the standard for non-print publications. He also co-founded Diotima, where he collected and made available to the world the materials he used so successfully in his course on women in antiquity. He also helped found the Suda on Line for Byzantine Greek Lexicography, Educe, a scanning technology to read unwrapped papyrus rolls, and he collaborated in the high-resolution digital imaging of the Venetus A manuscript of the Iliad. At the University of Kentucky he was instrumental in founding the Collaboratory for Research in Computing for Humanities, a project to introduce his colleagues to using computers in their research. He took as much joy in watching his three sons play soccer as they took in playing it. Sailing and hiking vacations in his native Virginia gave him special pleasure and special time with his family. He was claimed by cancer on March 15, 2008, but the future of our research will forever be indebted to him.

Charles J. Zabrowski (2008)

The two great loves of Charles J. Zabrowski's professional life were the teaching of classical Greek to undergraduates and the investigation of the Byzantine manuscripts of Aeschylus and their attendant scholia. These interests were nurtured at Canisius College in Buffalo, where he graduated summa cum laude in 1967. He went on to receive an M.A. in Classics and Ancient History from the University of Toronto. He spent 1973-74 as Seymour Fellow at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens and received his Ph.D. from Fordham in 1984. He pursued these passions at Elmira College, then at Boston College, then from 1979 to 1985 at Creighton, where he joined CAMWS. In 1987 he moved to Gettysburg College where he was a familiar and beloved figure, teaching his class and strolling about the campus in his academic robes, in which he always taught his classes. He rose to full professor, served as secretary of the faculty and was chairman of the department from 1998 to 2004. He lost his long battle with lung cancer on January 30, 2008.

James J. Williams (2008)

James J. Williams was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on Christmas Eve in 1927 and graduated from Emory University. He received an S.T.M at Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, an M.A. at Northwestern University in Evanston and an M.A.L.S. at Rosary College in Chicago, after which he was ordained as a pastor of the Methodist church. After marriage to his wife Catherine in Charlotte in 1951, he moved to Elmhurst, Illinois, where he was an associate professor and librarian at Elmhurst College from 1960 to 1994, teaching Greek, classical literature and theology. He and his wife led study tours for students and adults to Greece, Italy and Ireland through their travel company, Dolpin Travel. Williams retired in 1994 to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. He died in Green Bay, Wiscosin, January 20, 2008, at the age of 80.

Peter G. Theis (2007)

Peter G. Theis taught Greek and Latin at Marquette University for 29 years, enlivening his classes with his good humor, his love of Latin, and his passion for teaching. He was the president of the Milwaukee Latin Teachers Association, the Wisconsin Latin Teachers Association and the Wisconsin Foreign Language Teachers Association. He was an ardent fan of the Milwaukee Brewers and a devoted family man. He died at the age of 77 on December 30, 2007.

Nancy Pearce Helmbold (2007)

Nancy Pearce Helmbold came out of Abilene, Texas, where she was born in 1918 to a typewriter salesman and his wife, a born teacher with a special gift for languages. Although she had swept the Texas state high-school Latin contest four years in a row, she graduated from the University of Texas in 1939 with a degree in liberal arts because Latin was "too square." She began work for the FBI as a secretary in San Antonio, where she translated Spanish calls and letters. During the occupation of Japan after World War II, the harbor of Tokyo and many of the islands that were scenes of the most intensely fought battles were filled with Japanese mines. Nancy learned Japanese in order to translate the nautical documents that located these mines. Her language skills literally saved lives from 1946 to 1950. But as her colleague Peter White said, "Her life was devoted to teaching Latin." Thanks to the G.I. Bill, she was able to leave Japan for Berkeley in 1950 where she continued her study of East Asian languages, but a couple of Latin courses changed her direction for life. She received a Ph.D. in 1957 and a year later married the Berkeley Hellenist William Clark Helmbold in 1958. She taught at Mount Holyoke and the University of Oregon before joining the University of Chicago in 1963 following her husband's departure from Berkeley. In Hyde Park, she taught Latin at all levels, including intensive summer courses, and was known as famously stringent in maintaining standards for punctuality, precision and intensity. Her specialty was Latin 301 to 303, the introductory sequence for graduate students not in the classics. Even after her retirement in 1989, when she received the Burlington Northern Faculty Achievement Award for her teaching, she continued teaching well into her eighties. Her great passion outside the classroom was grand opera which she attended over fifteen times a year with two of her former students. She said, "I would like to think that some of my students will read Latin poetry for the rest of their lives." Her colleague Elizabeth Asmis said that her passion for teaching Latin "never left her." Nancy Helmbold died of natural causes on October 30, 2007.

James R. Jochum taught Latin in the secondary schools for 28 years. At New Albany High School in Indiana he taught three levels of Latin and one of English. He had a master’s degree he was a lifelong Catholic. He died at the age of 57 on October 9, 2007.

Naidyne Brown Bridwell was a familiar figure at CAMWS meetings for as long as any of us can remember. Born in Kentucky in 1924, she received her B.A. summa cum laude from Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky, and taught at John Hersey High School in Illinois for nearly four decades. She retired from high-school teaching in 1984 when she moved to Denver with her husband Bill (Wilburn F.), who died in 1995. At Regis University she was one of the most energetic and effective state vice-presidents in CAMWS. Her regional newsletter set a standard for all. For these and her lifetime dedication to teaching she received many awards, including a CAMWS ovatio in 1995. When she died on September 24, 2007, the classical world lost one of its most dedicated teachers and ardent supporters.

Alexander "Sandy" Gordon McKay (2007)

Were we to devote all four days and 68 paper sessions to memories of the person, the contribution, and the dear personality of Sandy McKay, we could not exhaust the reservoir of expertise, wisdom and kindness that characterized one of this association’s most accomplished and beloved members. Alexander Gordon McKay was born on Christmas Eve in 1924 in Toronto. His grandfather was Chancellor of McMaster University on Hamilton, Ontario. Sandy attended Upper Canada College then Trinity College at the University of Toronto as a Duke of Wellington Scholar, where he graduated with honors in Classics. He decamped to Yale as a Kellogg Fellow where he received an M.A., thence to Princeton as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, receiving the A.M. and Ph.D. After stints at Wells College, The University of Pennsylvania, Mount Allison, Waterloo, Western, and Manitoba, he joined the faculty at McMaster in 1957, where he served for 33 years as chairman of the department from 1962 to 1968 and again in 1976 to 1979, and Dean of the Humanities from 1968 to 1973. He was President of CAMWS in 1972-3, his elegant and crisp Latin style graced the ovationes for over ten years, and he received a CAMWS ovatio himself in 1978. He was resident of the Classical Association of Canada in 1978-80, The Vergilian Society of America in 1973-4, and in 1988 he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. His early interest in Aeschylus was soon displaced by devotion to Virgil, resulting in over 15 books, more than 80 articles and over 100 book reviews, but he will be especially remembered as the indefatigable annual bibliographer of Virgil, whose lists in Vergilius regularly ran into the hundreds of items. He also served the Virgilian Society as a guide on numerous tours for nearly fifty years, drawing devoted members to the Society. He was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, and received honorary degrees Manitoba, Brock, Queens, and McMaster. He continued to teach even after his retirement in 1990 and in 1992 he was honored with a Festschrift that focused on his beloved Virgil, his constant companion until Sandy’s much grieved passage across the Styx on August 31, 2007.

Robert Joseph Rowland, Jr. (1938-2007) was born in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, Professor of History and Dean of Arts and Sciences at Loyola University, New Orleans. A graduate of LaSalle College (1959), he earned his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania (1961, 1964), while working as an instructor at his alma mater (1959-65). He remained in the Philadelphia area as instructor and assistant professor at Villanova (1961-7) before he began a well-travelled and distinguished career as an expert on Sardinian history and archaeology. He moved to the University of Missouri, where he was associate professor of classics (1967-72), associate professor of history (1972-4) and professor (1974-84). To this period belong not only numerous studies of Sardinia and Ritrovamenti Romani in Sardegna (1981), but also the beginning of his long and meritorious service both to CAMWS as president of the Southern Section (1982-4) and the APA as president of the Friends of Ancient History, but especially to the Vergilian Society of America as Executive Secretary (1980-91), which led to the founding of the journal Augustan Age and his editing of Vergil and the American Experience (1987). In 1984 he moved to the University of Maryland as professor and chair of the Classics Department (1984-91). There he burnished his reputation with Studies in Sardinian Archaeology (edited with Miriam S. Balmuth) in two volumes (Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, 1984-6) and served as President of CAAS (1989-90). In 1991 he moved yet again, this time to Loyola University in New Orleans as Professor of History and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. His last major publication was The Periphery in the Center: Sardinia in the Ancient and Medieval Worlds (Oxford: Archeopress, 2001). He died on March 14, 2007.

Eugene Numa Lane (2007)

Eugene Numa Lane (1936-2007) was salutatorian of his Princeton class (1958). He received an M.A. from Yale in 1960 and his Ph.D. two years later. After a year at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, he taught at the University of Virginia (1962-6), then the University of Missouri, Columbia, where he rose from associate to full professor, serving a term as chair and another as graduate director. In teaching and scholarship Greek was his preferred language and he taught it at all levels in classes ranging from small seminars to auditorium-sized mythology classes. He returned to the Athens to teach at the American School in the summer of 1992 and after retiring in 2000 he served on the School's Managing Committee. His scholarship enlarged our understanding of Greek cults in Rome by means of his superb editing of the four-volume Corpus monumentorum religionis dei Menis (Leiden: Brill, 1971-8) and two of the three volumes of Corpus cultus Iovis Sabazii (Leiden: Brill, 1983-9), permanent testimony to the breadth and precision of his scholarship. His sourcebook, Paganism and Christianity, 100-425 C.E. (edited with Ramsay MacMullen) (Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 1992), is invaluable on its subject. His piety, demonstrated by his editing Cybele, Attis, and related cults: essays in memory of M. J. Vermaseren (Leiden: Brill, 1996), inspired similar impulses in his students, resulting in his own Festschrift edited by Cathy Callaway (Stoa Consortium, 2002). He died of complications of Parkinson's Disease on New Year's Day 2007.

Stuart L. Wheeler (2006)

Stuart L. Wheeler, a lifelong Virginian, received his undergraduate education at the College of William and Mary, his master's from Vanderbilt. He attended Johns Hopkins University for two years of graduate study. Following two years of high-school teaching in York County, Virginia, he was appointed to the faculty of the University of Richmond in 1967 and ultimately chaired the Department of Classical Studies and was a president of the Virginia Classical Association. Wheeler was noted among students for his Bill Cosby sweaters, the fervency of his political views, his dry humor, rollicking trips with students to Greece, and in class a particular stress on correct Latin pronunciation. In the words of a colleague, Wheeler believed that "environments need to be nurtured to foster culture." Wheeler expressed this in many ways, from his furnishing a comfortable and attractive classics library to serving on Richmond's Commission of Architectural Review (1972-82) to rescuing (as program director) the university's Urban Practice and Policy Program to running his own antiques shop, Distinctive Consignments, Ltd. In the 1970s, he saved the mummy of Ti Ameny Net from destruction and stored it in the trunk of his car for a year until it could go on permanent display in university's Ancient World Gallery. He died on August 25, 2006, at the age of 68 of lung cancer.

Theodore J. Tracy (2006)

Theodore J. Tracy, S.J. (1916-2006) was born in Chicago where he lived throughout his active career. His life was dominated by his devotion to the Society of Jesus and his interest in the ancient world. He was educated at Loyola Academy and joined the Society in 1939, the year after graduating from Loyola University of Chicago. In 1942 he earned an M.A. in classics and philosophy from Loyola and began his teaching career at his alma mater, Loyola Academy (1943-7). He turned then to theology and was ordained in 1950 and received an S.T.L. from Bellarmine School of Theology (1951). He turned back to classics and enrolled at Princeton, where he received an M.A. (1954) and, at the age of 46, a Ph.D. (1962), writing a dissertation on the physiological theory and the theory of the mean in Plato and Aristotle under Whitney Oates. In the meantime, he served one year as an instructor at Xavier University in Cincinnati (1955-6) before returning to Loyola in Chicago where he became associate professor (1956-70) and chair of the department (1960-7). In 1970 he became associate professor at the new University of Illinois at Chicago Circle (1970-81), serving one year as chair (1974-5) while serving on the Board of Trustees of Loyola for more than a decade. In this period he served as first vice-president of CAMWS (1977-8). His publications were few, but not slight was his reputation as a nearly ideal colleague and teacher. A student of yoga, he maintained the notion of a mind-spirit balance that matched the balance of the love of antiquity and devotion to his faith. He died on October 2, 2006.

Henry Lloyd Stow (2006)

Henry Lloyd Stow graduated from the University of Chicago in 1930 and was a Ryerson Fellow at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (1932-3), where he met and fell in love with a fellow student, Hester Harrington. After completing his Ph.D. at Chicago in 1936, he married Harrington and took a position with the University of Oklahoma. Fifteen years later, while chair of the Oklahoma department Stow accepted the chairmanship of the department at Vanderbilt in 1952. He returned to the American School three times as a teacher. He remained chair at Vanderbilt until 1976, when he retired. He was so distinguished as a teacher that he won Vanderbilt's Sarratt Cup for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and continued teaching after retirement by leading alumni trips to Greece and the Mediterranean. He died August 26, 2006, at the age of 97.

Harry Carraci Rutledge (2006)

Harry Carraci Rutledge (1932-2006) was born in Chillicothe, Ohio. All of his higher education occurred at Ohio State, where he received a B.Sc.Ed. (1954), M.A. (1957), and Ph.D. (1960). His first job was as assistant professor of classics at the University of Georgia, where he rose to associate professor (1960-9) and head of the Romance Languages Department (1962-9). Here he began to publish in his chosen field of interest, the classical tradition in the twentieth century with "T.S. Eliot and Virgil" in Vergilius (1966). He moved to Knoxville in 1969 as Professor of Classics at the University of Tennessee (1969-96), where he chaired the department for more than two decades (1968-91). Many of us remember with special fondness the papers first introduced in sessions at CAMWS meetings that were collected in The Guernica Bull: Studies in the Classical Tradition in the Twentieth Century (1989). Papers like "Classical Imagery in Henry James's Golden Bowl" (1977) and "Dido in Modern Literature" (1981) are among his best. Harry is perhaps best remembered for his great service to classical organizations. He was president of three of the largest: the Vergilian Society of America (1977-9), the American Classical League (1990-4) and our own CAMWS (1979-80). He was also president of the Southern Comparative Literature Association (1978-9) and secretary to the advisory council of the American Academy in Rome (1971-5). A rare grace and a generous soul in a loving friend to the world of classics, Harry died on April 15, 2006.

Bernard Goldman (1922-2006) served his alma mater, Wayne State University, from which he graduated in 1947, for over forty years, teaching a wide variety of courses in Art History. His lifelong specialty was the subject of his last major publication, The Discovery of Dura-Europas (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1979). He used his extensive knowledge of the art of Central and Western Asia for publications aimed both at scholars (The Sacred Portal: A Primary Symbol in Ancient Judaic Art [Detroit: Wayne State University Press, 1966]) and for students (The Ancient Arts of Western and Central Asia [Ames: Iowa State University Press, 1991] and Reading and Writing in the Arts: A Handbook [Detroit: Wayne State University Press, 1972]). He also served as a director of the Wayne State University Press for a decade. He died on March 22, 2006, at the age of 83.

Deborah June Mason (2006)

Deborah June Mason was not known primarily as one who taught Latin; according to her students, she "taught life"; Latin was the means by which she did so. Her own life began on November 15, 1947, in Campbell County, Virginia. After graduating from Randolph-Macon Women's College in history, she began her 22-year career at Altavista High School in Altavista, Virginia teaching history, but when the Latin teacher was felled by a heart attack, she took over his classes. A resolution from the Virginia House of Delegates notes that she always encouraged her students "to contribute to their community and aspire to their full academic potential." Unmarried and with no children of her own, she called her students her "babies," and for ten summers took them to Italy to see and touch the monuments that made their classwork come to vivid life. She also took her students to different parts of America doing relief work for Habitat for Humanity, DAWN, American Red Cross Tsunami Relief, and in the last year of her life she led her students in volunteering for the Katrina Relief Program. Small wonder that she was named Campbell County Teacher of the Year in 1994 and the Central Virginia Governor's School Outstanding Educator in 1995. Small wonder that on February 11, 2006, her death was grieved by her students as sorely as they also joyously celebrated her life.

David Roy Shackleton Bailey (2005)

What can be added to the numerous tributes to one of the greatest scholars of our time, David Roy Shackleton Bailey, born in December 1917? As E.J. Kenney wrote, he was a "lover of facts" who devoted his life to "the establishment and explication of Latin texts." He attended Lancaster Grammar School where his father was headmaster, received a first class Cambridge in Classical Languages, then after switching to Sanskrit and Pali, received a second first in Oriental Languages. Following work in British Intelligence in World War II, Bailey became University Lecturer in Tibetan at Cambridge in 1948, where he published an important edition of Buddhist hymns. By 1955 he had returned to classics and shortly published his first great book, Propertiana, an invaluable compendium of information and insight not only on the elegist but on editing Latin texts in general. In the next fifty years he published editions of Horace, Lucan, Martial, Valerius Maximus, Quintilian. He would ultimately edit over thirty Loeb editions. His greatest work, indeed one of the greatest works of classical scholarship in the twentieth century, was his edition of Cicero's letters in 10 volumes. In 1968 he moved into CAMWS territory, joining the University of Michigan. Seven years later he decamped to Harvard as Pope Professor of Latin. Apparently the CAMWS call was so alluring that when he retired from Harvard in 1988, he returned to Ann Arbor, where he died on November 28, 2005. Though in truth there is no recorded connection between Bailey and CAMWS, we should be nonetheless enthusiastic in celebrating the life and accomplishments of this truly great scholar who was in our midst.

Barbara Anne Boyle Hardin (2005)

Barbara Anne Boyle Hardin died on November 13, 2005. Born in Wichita, Kansas, she moved to Oklahoma City in 1964 and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Oklahoma in 1974. In 1985 she received a Master's in Educational Administration from the University of Memphis in 1979. She taught at Germantown High School in Germantown, Tennessee, where she chaired the Foreign Languages Department from 1987 to 2003. In 2004 she was named Humanities Teacher of the Year for the State of Tennessee. This was the capstone of a career filled with honors, including being named a distinguished teacher in 1990 and 1998 by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, and Foreign Language Teacher of the Year by the University of Memphis in 2003. Throughout her distinguished career, she embodied for students, colleagues and friends alike, the wisdom of her personal motto, "carpe diem."

Edmund G. Berry (2005)

The name of Edmund G. Berry will always be synonymous with classics at the University of Manitoba. A native of Leslie in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Berry emigrated to Canada as a boy with his family. He graduated from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, in 1936, receiving the Prince of Wales Prize for the highest grades in the college. In the next year he moved to the University of Chicago, where he completed a dissertation on Moira and Tyche in Greek literature under Werner Jaeger in 1940 with a Daniel L. (not Paul) Shorey Fellowship. In 1940 he moved to Manitoba, rising to Professor of Classics in 1956. In 1961 he was named Head of Classics, a position he held for 17 years. He published over 40 articles in his 55-year career at Manitoba and is best known for Emerson's Plutarch, published by Harvard University Press in 1961. He received a Guggenheim grant in 1951 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1971. He died November 3, 2005.

Effie Douglas (2005)

Effie Douglas was a Latin legend in Indiana even deep into her nineties when she died on August 25, 2005. She taught for over half a century, first at Flora High School in Flora, Indiana, and then at Carroll High School in Fort Wayne. She founded the first Indiana chapter of the JCL and was a longtime chair of the Indiana JCL's scholarship committee, giving her name to the Effie Douglas Membership Award, given each year to a deserving high-school student, ensuring that her name will be associated with Latin achievement for generations to come.

Christina Elliott Sorum (2005)

The sudden passing of Christina Elliott Sorum shocked the many members of this Association who had followed her career from her undergraduate days at Wellesley from which she graduated in 1967 and her distinguished graduate career at Brown, where she received her doctorate in 1975. She had been a member of CAMWS from 1975 to 1981, during her tenure at North Carolina State. Although she moved to Union College in 1982, she maintained her contact with the Association during her rise from chairman of the department at Union to Frank Bailey Professor of Classics and in 1994, Dean of Arts and Sciences, in 2000 dean of faculty and vice president of academic affairs in 2000. Her articles on Sophocles and Euripides were insightful and clear, her teaching gained her awards at both N.C. State and Union, as well as a Pew Memorial Trust Research Grant. She was the dean we all would wish for our colleges. She said, "Faculty must participate in their disciplines outside the walls of the College, and we deans must provide the opportunity for them to do good scholarship and research." May 16, 2005, brought a far too early end to such an enlightened administrator.

Briggs Leon Twyman (2005)

Briggs Leon Twyman was a native of Kansas City, Missouri. While his older brother Jack became a star basketball player at the University of Cincinnati and entered the NBA Hall of Fame, Briggs received both his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He began his teaching career at Colorado Women's College in 1969 and after receiving his Ph.D. in 1972, moved in the next year to the history department of Texas Tech in Lubbock, where he retired as Associate Professor Emeritus in 2003. He died at 66 on May 1, 2005 in Lubbock.

Royce L. B. Morris (2005)

Royce L.B. Morris was born in Calhoun County, Mississippi, in 1938. He graduated from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1961, where he joined Eta Sigma Phi. He subsequently taught Latin from 1962 to 1965 at Cleburne Public Schools in Cleburne Texas before receiving an M.A. in Classics from the University of Mississippi in 1966. His wife of 48 years was his high-school sweetheart. He followed his professor, William H. Willis, from Oxford to Durham, where he received a Ph.D. in papyrology in 1975. He ended his collegiate teaching career where it began, at Emory and Henry College, after thirty-two years of service during which he was awarded an NEH grant, received the college's Excellence in Teaching Award, was elected president of the Classical Association of Virginia, and in 1973 established a class in the Art and Archaeology of Rome that included a trip to Italy. The class has offered a remarkable opportunity for a generation of students who mourn the passing of their guide and mentor. He died on March 29, 2005.

Stanley Vandersall was the former chairman of the classics department at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He began Latin at Roxbury Latin School in his native Massachusetts. His undergraduate degree was from the College of Wooster and his graduate work at Ohio State was cut short by the demands of World War II. He learned sufficient Japanese to interpret intelligence documents in Hawaii and Japan. After the war, he took his position at Nebraska and for 37 years taught virtually every class in the department. Students often referred to him as Commander Vandersall, though in his passion to cover all aspects of the day's topic, he would the classes long; no one left. His other passions were his pipe and the railroads of North America. He retired in 1985 but maintained his presence in the classroom, teaching a course known popularly as "Latin for Retirees". He was married for 63 years and died last November at the age of 87. His generosity is evident in his bequests to a number of classical organizations.

Jack Martin Balcer taught at Denison and Indiana Universities and came to Ohio State in 1971. A renowned teacher, he was a student favorite whose own photographs of sites, coins and people helped make his courses treasured memories for generations of Ohio State students. His work on numismatics and the relations of Greeks and non-Greeks in Asia Minor won him numerous prestigious grants, but his first love remained the University and the students he taught for over thirty years.

Michael Brown of the University of Illinois died in August of 2004. He was a precise and prolific scholar from his earliest days as an undergraduate and graduate student at the University of Michigan. He taught at Harvard and was a fellow at the Hellenic Center before coming to the Urbana in 1974. With the publication of 240 articles and 23 monographs he established himself as the world authority on Old Nubian, the earliest ebonics, publishing a dictionary and a grammar of that language.

Robert Edgeworth was a Chicago native, who received his undergraduate education at Loyola University in that city and went on to receive degrees from the University of Michigan, writing his dissertation under Shackleton Bailey on colors in ancient authors. His numerous articles and presentations covered a wide range of Greek and Roman authors, reflecting the breadth and value of his teaching first at the Australian National University, then at San Diego State, then at Louisiana State University. He was well-known on campus not only for his popular lectures but for his propensity to become a contestant on television game shows like Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and Who Wants to be a Millionaire. A man who put his beliefs into action, he was chairman of the Latin Liturgy Committee and was twice a Louisiana delegate to the Republican National Convention. His death in October followed a heroic bout against cancer.

Paul Rehak was a son of Ann Arbor who graduated from the University of Michigan in 1976 and went on to receive a masters in 1980 and a Ph.D. in 1985 from Bryn Mawr. A White Fellow at the American School in 1981, he followed a one-year stint at the University of Kansas with appointments at the College of Wooster, the American University in Paris, and six years at Loyola University of Chicago. He taught archaeology at Duke from 1995 to 2000, then returned to the University of Kansas in 2001. Throughout his too brief career he gave selflessly of himself to numerous committees, as book review editor for the American Journal of Archaeology, and as secretary of the alumni association of the American School, and to his beautiful pack of retrievers and shelties whose photos still appear on his website. He died in June 2004 of a heart attack.

Shilpa Raval was born in India, raised in New Jersey, and was an honors graduate of Drew University in 1991. In the process of acquiring her Ph.D. at Brown she fashioned a superb dissertation on gender, language, and sexuality in Ovid's Metamorphoses, which promised a brilliant future and original contributions to the field of gender studies. She was two years at the University of Missouri, 1998-2000 before moving on to Yale, where she was an energetic teacher, and publisher on many aspects of the portrayal of women from Andromache to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Her colleagues in Columbia and New Haven remember an irreplaceable teacher and scholar, her students recall a generous friend with a million watt smile that dimmed only after an heroic bout with cancer ended her life at 34 in May of 2004.
