Archibald Joseph CHRISTOPHERSON was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota, 17 September 1931. He received his A.B. in philosophy from St. Paul Seminary in 1952. His graduate study at the University of Minnesota was interrupted by military service, after which, he married in 1956, and from 1957 to 1962 taught at De Matha High School in Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C. Following his M.A. in history from the University of Maryland in 1961, he taught for a year at the Catholic University of America (1961-2). He taught ancient history at Northwestern University (1962-3) and Classics and ancient history at the University of Missouri (1963-5). Upon completing his Ph.D. at Maryland under Wilhelmina Jashemski in 1965 with a dissertation entitled “The Establishment of Roman Government in the Three Gauls,” he was named assistant professor of classics and history at the University of Cincinnati (1965-8). He excerpted his dissertation as “The Provincial Assembly of the Three Gauls in the Julio-Claudian Period,” in Historia 17(1968) 351-66 and was promoted to associate professor in 1968. He chaired the department in 1973-4, and directed numerous theses and dissertations. In 1993 he published “A Prolegomena to the Study of Property and Society in Early Rome” in Alpha to Omega : Studies in Honor of George John Szemler on his Sixty-Fifth Birthday, ed. William J. Cherf (Chicago: Ares). He died on 20 September 2011, three days after his 80th birthday.
